Practise Yoga Effectively With Little Equipment!

May 23, 2008

One of the aspects about yoga that appeals to so many people is the fact that you don’t need a lot of equipment to perform the exercises; hence a very low outlay is required. In fact you don’t need any yoga equipment to perform most of the basic yoga moves which makes it very easy for yoga to be practised almost anywhere. It also makes it easy for people of all ages to participate in yoga exercises and get the life-changing benefits that it will present to them.

Not only is it one of the most beneficial forms of exercise that you could undertake but it is also one of the few that requires virtually no investment of money other than some loose clothing to ensure that you can perform the poses comfortably. Traditionally,  yoga is done in bare feet so you don’t even need to buy any special footwear to practise yoga.

Unlike many sports you don’t even need to rely on expensive additional supplements, vitamins and minerals to make up for any deficiencies that can be caused through specific forms of exercise. Yoga in itself will improve your health and well-being and if anything reduce your dependence on the need to take additional supplements to compensate other factors that are lacking in your health and fitness.

As you become more advanced with your yoga exercises you might feel the need to add some additional equipment to assist in taking yourself to higher levels. This can be as many as simple as a mat that will reduce the chance of slipping when doing your standing poses. You might also like to get straps that can assist with your stretching although even these don’t need to be anything more than a piece of rope or a belt that you’ve probably got lying around the house.

Yoga is practiced extensively in countries where the people cannot afford to spend money on specific exercise equipment. Fortunately basic equipment such as Yoga mats that will provide some form of cushioning and slip resistance on the floor, and bolsters that will help to get your body in the correct position, providing alignment for your spine and legs can be purchased for very little expense.
Even the genuine Yoga straps that will help you to achieve more flexibility by helping you to perform poses that you couldn’t otherwise do without the assistance of the strap, cost very little to purchase. The only other item that you could possibly need would be a blanket which most of us possess anyway.

Modern Day Ailments Cured By A 3000 Year Old Cure!

May 20, 2008

Yoga is a 3,000-year-old, Hindu discipline of mind and body that came to fore in Western society via the hippie generation of the Sixties and early Seventies. Its image as a mystic practice is disappearing as fast as the stressful aspects of the twenty-first century are appearing.

As an effective method of stress management, yoga practise is spreading into the business world, the helping professions, nursing and old age homes, and is used in the treatment of alcoholics, hyperactive children and youngsters with learning disabilities. Yoga centers are getting stiff competition from adult education classes of community colleges, boards of education and parks and recreation departments.

The meaning of yoga is union of the body, mind and spirit with truth and enlightenment. There are many kinds of yoga moves to study, and there can be endless years of practice for the willing student.

Hatha Yoga is among the most popular forms in the west. It emphasizes the practice of postures, which stretch and strengthen the body, help develop a sense of balance and flexibility, as well as body awareness and mental concentration. All forms of yoga incorporate the practice of proper breathing techniques for relaxation, to rest the mind from its constant chatter, to experience an internal calm, and to energize and purify the body.

As stress levels in our Western society escalate, Raja Yoga, the yoga of meditation, is growing in popularity in Western society, while others, such as Krya Yoga, the yoga of cleansing, and Mantra Yoga, the yoga of chanting, not surprisingly, have little appeal for newcomers.

Stretching and toning, though beneficial, aren’t the primary reasons people turn to yoga. Newcomers are hoping that yoga will provide them with a means for handling stress and diffusing tension in their fraught lives. The difference between exercise and yoga is that yoga has a meditative quality.

A lot of people are exercising for the psychological benefits and trying many of the Eastern activities, like yoga and tai chi. Yoga seems to have a calming and soothing effect on people.

And these yoga techniques work on children as well as adults. When your children are quarreling, ask them to stop what they’re doing, raise their arms over their heads, lean forward and breathe deeply to help diffuse their anger. It definitely helps them to cool it.

Hatha Yoga Moves

May 17, 2008

Hatha yoga is an ancient hindu system used for working with the human nervous system. Because its yoga moves release tension and fill you with renewed energy, far too many 21st century people, yoga teachers included, have come to look upon the venerable Indian physical science as solely an exercise for health and vitality of mind and body. It is that, but it is also much more. Hatha yoga practices are more spiritual than physical, more subtle than gross, more a means of understanding than an exotic way to relieve stress or limber up the body.

The yogis who developed hatha yoga designed it as a way to gain conscious control of our life energies, a way to go within, to harmonize the external so that the innermost Self could be encountered. To them, it was about states of consciousness, about living a divine life, and it was used widely as a preparation for meditation.

As you perform the asanas, concentrate on feeling those energies within the nerve currents. Sensitize yourself to knowing when the body has been in each position long enough to tune the nerve currents involved. Then shift smoothly into the next asana. It’s like a dance, a deliberate, fluid dance. During all postures, inhale using the diaphragm, not the chest muscles. Do not stretch unduly or force the body. Relax into the poses. Don’t worry if you can’t perform them all perfectly. Just ensure that you relax as this is paramount in the yoga practise. In time, you will find the body becoming more flexible and supple as your ‘ability’ to relax increases. Free the mind of thoughts and tensions. You will be more aware, more alive, more serene.

While there are many more complex hatha yoga routines, the first twenty-four asanas provide a balanced system for daily use. For the simple purpose of quieting the mind in preparation for meditation, this is all you will ever need. For best results, hatha yoga should be taught personally by a qualified teacher.  For more elaborate regimens, inquire at a recognized school specializing in hatha yoga.

The scene of hatha yoga has a spiritual purpose - to balance physical and physic energies in preparation for meditation. It is not only meant to make us young, beautiful or creative, but to aid us in quieting the mind, body and emotions that we may awaken enlightened consciousness & know the Self within. The practise of Hatha Yoga, the most common form of yoga followed in the modern Western world, will change your life for the better.

Different Yoga Styles To Consider

April 24, 2008

There are several different types of yoga and you really need to choose the one that you believe will offer you the most benefits for what you are trying to achieve.

All forms of yoga will add benefit no matter which one you choose because the various types of yoga will always focus on creating a calm and balance in the mind and body while helping to increase flexibility and fitness at the same time.

What many people regard as the most extreme form of yoga is known as Bikram yoga, where the routines are performed in heated rooms where the temperature is set at 95 degrees or more. For some people this can add stress to their exercises and for that reason there are many people who believe that performing under those conditions is detrimental to your well being.

For those people who use the Bikram yoga techniques on a regular basis, they believe that the increased temperatures help to relax and cleanse your body and in doing so give you more benefits over the standard forms of yoga.

The more common form of yoga that you will find in most centers throughout the country is Hatha Yoga. This is probably the best form of yoga for you to choose if you haven’t done any form of this exercise in the past as it will teach you all the basic types of poses that will also be applicable to various other forms of yoga if you intend to move into those other areas at a later date.

It is excellent for people who haven’t done any exercise previously and for elderly people as all the yoga moves are slow and relaxing and will assist in helping you to gain more flexibility without concern for injury.

One step up from Hatha Yoga is Vinyasa yoga which is performed at a faster pace and focuses a lot on breathing during the movements. The stretches that are involved in Vinyasa yoga are more advanced than those in Hatha and are possibly not quite as suitable for a beginner.

There are many other variations of yoga apart from these that I just mentioned but they all have the same philosophy of getting the mind and body to work as one to bring about a balance in your life.
